Johnson Controls celebrates 40 years in Singapore in 2022. Although incorporated in 1982, its various brands, such as YORK and Tyco, already had presence in Singapore prior to 1982. To mark this milestone, we spoke to a few long-serving pioneers.

Assistant Service Engineer, Derrick Yeaw, joined York 35 years ago because it was a known and reliable brand. He recounted many interesting assignments that took him to places like the Istana (the official residence of the President of Singapore), the Brunei Sultan’s palace and even on board a submarine! He was also attached to hospitals and got to see what went on in the operating theaters.

Regional Key Accounts Manager, Cindy Lee, joined Tyco 40 years ago. She started from a backend support role and was given the opportunity to pivot into a customer-facing one. She observed that Johnson Controls recognizes staff contribution and does not hesitate to groom employees for future challenges and leadership roles.

Their stories bear similarities with other long-serving pioneers including Terence Tan and Dzulkifli Bin Mohd Salleh who have grown with the company over the years. Today, Johnson Controls Singapore is 800-strong with unparalleled breadth of expertise in the built environment sector. Its products and solutions are in more than 40% of commercial buildings in Singapore.

The company has been transforming. The launch of OpenBlue suite of connected solutions and services in 2020 was a significant milestone. It combined the company’s considerable breadth and depth of domain expertise with digital innovation, making spaces and places safer, more agile and more sustainable.

“As a company we have committed to achieve net zero emissions by 2040, ten years ahead of the Paris Agreement, with science-based targets to reduce our operational emissions by 55% and customers’ emissions by 16% by 2030. In Singapore, we have actively participated in the built environment ecosystem, including through partnerships with companies and educational institutions, which will serve as the pipeline to build up talents and capacity in parallel, especially in this brave, new, green economy,” said Peter Ferguson, general manager, Southeast Asia, Johnson Controls.

Johnson Controls is committed to Singapore’s sustainability agenda and looking forward to many more decades of growth in this strategic market.
