The Challenge

The ever-expanding data market requires constant investment, technology, and facility management. A leader in the Asia Pacific market expanded its business in India by building multiple data center facilities. Leading the way in multiple tech platforms, the customer wanted its new data halls equipped with a complete building solution. Managing a data center's building solution required specific life safety and fire protection systems due to potential risks.

The System

  • Simplex Fire Alarm/Evacuation System- 22000 devices
  • Ansul inert Gas Suppression
  • Preaction Sprinkler System
  • LPG Water Mist System
  • Foam Based Extinguishing System
  • 739 Portable handheld fire extinguishers
  • HSSD System
  • Rodent Repellent system
  • Water and Hydrocarbon lead detection
  • 28 York Chillers

The Solution

The customer reached out during the planning stages, allowing Johnson Controls to take a consultative role in the process. Designed to meet specific customer requirements, Johnson Controls undertook installing and integrating the Fire, HVAC, and Controls systems. Data Centers have intricated and strict fire and safety requirements. With Johnson Controls innovative approach to both Fire and HVAC systems, the proposed solution included first of its kind and state of the art products. Johnson Controls used Metasys as an overlay graphic user interface, providing easy navigation between systems. Working as an overlay for individual and integrated systems, operators view a single screen able to pull up any information.

Because of the immense amount of power running a data center, efficient chillers are a must. Johnson Controls chose York YVAA0373 Chillers with R143a refrigerants in a standalone Chiller Plant Management system. Streamlining the Fire system through redundancy and eliminating any third party involvement significantly lowers any possibility of failure. Fully protecting a data center's intricate equipment and processes require individualized fire equipment and systems. The site'sdiesel generator has three separate systems, Rodent Repellent, flame detectors, and foam sensors. AquaMist, the overarching fire suppression system throughout the site, works in concert with not only the diesel generator's systems, but also heat detectors, VESDA alarms, and the gas suppression system. For this site, Johnson Controls installed new, more sensitive acoustic nozzles with the gas suppression system. Most nozzles in similar sites react to noise above 130 dB, which is close to the noise generated by a plane taking off. By the time vibrations reach over 130 dB, damage has already occurred within a data center. The new devices, installed by

Johnson Controls, react to vibrations at a much lower level, increasing equipment and information protection. Coupled with the Ansul Gas Suppression system, each aspect of the site is redundantly protected.

Outcomes That Matter

Johnson Controls innovative approach to both HVAC and Fire systems manage day to day operations and potential incidents efficiently. Installing Metasys as the GUI aids operators in quick navigation between all systems, enabling quick response time to any incident. By utilizing redundancies, integration, and multiple types of fire systems, the site is proactively protected. These systems provide continuous protection, minimizing any risk of accidental discharge and resulting damage. In the event of a fire or electrical incident, the customer faces minimal potential for damage due with Johnson Controls environmentally sustainable and efficient solutions.
