How do we bring fresh talent into the industry, and what does it take to succeed at Johnson Controls? This Intern Day, we put a few of our trusty interns in the hot seat and find out what drew them to the industry, and what makes them tick.

What do you do at work?

The first week of internship, I was introduced to Johnson Controls OpenBlue Enterprise Manager, which allows clients to easily view their building asset data from a single pane of glass. It helps clients make fast and informed building decisions, ensuring energy efficiency. With that, the work I do revolves around verification of the data shown to clients to ensure that they are up to date, correct and relevant.

Why did you choose to work with Johnson Controls?

I have been exploring and exposing myself to the sustainable and renewable energy sector. Johnson Controls values align with mine. Johnson Controls is pretty vocal about their commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency. I was curious about their solutions and services and wanted to see how I could contribute to that as well.

What is the biggest surprise / challenge that you've faced in your internship so far?

During my internship, I was learning to use third-party software like SCADA engine and the different protocols like OPC, BACNET - all very new to me but also very necessary to get the job done. The team that I work with has been really great at teaching me, making it very easy for me to understand and pick up as the days went on.

What's your favorite thing about the work here?

The people and the work culture of Johnson Controls. They value your input and feedback. At the same time, they are great teachers and mentors. They also have a genuine curiosity about your interests and how you are as a person. I think this made it very easy for me to work with them, making work not only more manageable but enriching as well.

Any advice for future interns?

Embrace new skills that you might need to pick up to do the job. Manage your time wisely and to be vocal and curious enough to find out for yourself the inner workings of the project you are given.

What are some of your hobbies when you're not hard at work?

I enjoy any sorts of outdoor activity. Running, hiking, badminton and such. I’m also a part time Starbucks barista too when not interning.
