What are the sustainability best practices that can help your company compete?

In a commissioned study recently conducted by Forrester Consulting, developed in collaboration with Johnson Controls, 72 percent of respondents indicated that implementing or maturing their sustainability programs is not only a top priority but has also increased in importance over the past two years. An overwhelming majority of 2,348 senior sustainability leaders surveyed in 25 countries across the globe are investing in cleaner and more energy-efficient buildings.

This global study assessed how companies are pursuing their sustainability goals. The results were emphatic and illustrated that sustainability is now a top business priority for companies. Key learnings

In September 2021, we surveyed 2,348 senior sustainability strategy leaders across 19 industries and 25 countries to investigate their business priorities and sustainability strategies over the next 12 months.

Here are three key things we learned.

1. Sustainability maturity delivers competitive advantage
The study showed businesses gain competitive advantages and grow by implementing mature sustainability initiatives. Sustainability has become the number one business priority for 80 percent of companies ahead of improving profitability and customer experience.

2. Incremental progress delivers exponential results
Companies at every maturity level have realized or expect to realize various benefits, including improved efficiencies (96 percent) and improved compliance (95 percent).

3. Achieving decarbonization requires a strategic plan and strong leadership
The study showed that the most sustainably engaged companies are successful because of strong senior leadership and powerful partnerships that guide smart sustainability investments. Additionally, the study indicated more than half of respondents hope to reduce energy consumption in their buildings by 2024 or earlier but lack alignment around what metrics need to be tracked and how.
